OUT WITH THE OLD & IN WITH THE NEW… YOU?
My sister has a rule in her house – if you bring something in, you have to let something else go to make room for it. Now her kids are grown and it’s a way of life for them, too. The simple brilliance of it always impressed me – on many levels – and yet somehow I was never able to bring it home. Lately, I’ve been changing my relationship with my space, so I’m ready now and the New Year is a perfect time to begin.
Resolutions like this are one thing. There’s something natural about marking time with these renewed intentions, striving to be better people with every passing of the year. Whether we have kept them in the past may not be the point – as long as we believe we can, we’ll stay inspired enough to keep doing our best. Still…
… my community of friends and family has found that a little focused reflection at this time of year goes a long way – especially when we consider that our intentions and beliefs are actually shaping our experience.
There’s a helpful tool called “Turning the Wheel” that came to me years ago (thank you, Nicole K!) and we’ve circulated it ever since. I’ve modified it many times along the way. It’s been so valuable that I wanted to share it here with you.
My current version consists of 50 questions and you are encouraged to answer just one, many or all of them, as you like. You can download Turning the Wheel 2010 - 2011 here (completely free) and use it in any number of ways. I like to take some quiet time before the year begins and let any resolutions I make come out of this process. Others like to cut the questions out and use them at holiday gatherings to stimulate conversation or incorporate into a game.
Of the 50, this question has been “randomly” chosen for you now.
What advice would you give to yourself for 2011? Why?
Enjoy! Please feel free to comment or leave your answer to this question below in the Comments section (and if you do answer, please indicate what question you are answering!).
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the interesting article! I should be so thoughtful about my years! Stimulating!
I am so glad to get a post from you to finish the year out. I hope you are well.
Reflecting on my past year and thinking about/planning my upcoming year are a tradition for me during the week between Christmas & New Year’s – but especially on New Year’s Day. Your ‘Turning the Wheel’ questions help so much to clarify what worked and what didn’t, and what I’d like to do/happen/be in the next year. Thanks so much! Wishing you an amazing and fulfilling New Year!
